Default Time to buy a new set of clubs

I played a bit in Highschool and used to shoot in the mid to low 80's. It's been about 5 years since I've played, but lately a lot of my coworkers have been hitting up the driving range and a local course everyday after work. I've played with them a few times, and am starting to get back into the groove. the only problem is that my clubs are too short and my club speed is WAY too high for the driver I have.

Are there any specifics places you guys would recommend, or brands you would recommend to me before I get hustled by somebody trying to make extra $$$ selling me a set of custom fit clubs.

P.S. I have a budget of about $1,300 for a set of irons and two drivers. I have the wedges and putter taken care of.

Thanks!

$1,300 should be plenty of cash. I would just go to a good golf store/shop and get fitted. Try some different irons and drivers and see what you like. Take it from there.

Curious. Why do you want two drivers?

Don't go get "custom fit" for clubs - go to a demo day where cleveland/taylormade etc is fitting, and get clubs fit for free.

Or, go pay $30-$40 to have a pro fit you for clubs. Remember what they tell you and then use that info to shop. You don't have to buy from the people who fit you.

And 1300 is more than enough for irons+woods.

I'll check around and see which brands are setting up demo days locally.

Which brands would you recommend? Is one generally any better than the other, or should this be something I discuss with the person who fits me?

Thanks guys!

You might want to read some reviews online. Then a golf superstore place is alright since you can usually hit a variety of clubs, get a feel for how a number of different clubs look or feel. A demo day is a great idea. It is a big decision since you will likely be playing with these clubs for years to come, so take your time. If you don't feel comfortable with the sales staff/level of expertise, take your business somewhere else.

I might also suggest not ruling out a set of used clubs. If you want to start getting serious about the game this might give you the opportunity to save some money, then upgrade to something after a year or two as you get going.

you shot in the mid to low 80's and refer to your fairway metals as drivers?

Who would you think would be more qualified, the guy in the Pro Shop or the guy at the Golf Superstore?

When I say drivers I'm referring to one true driver and one other wood or utility iron.

Thinkin of buyin a new set as I have a Wilson XLS (i think) that included a D, 3w (I broke it over my knee 2 years ago) 5W 3I-9I PW, A SW I bought seperate and a Wilson Putter I picked up that I love....

...Clubs are outdated, feel clunky, and the Woods are way to flexible for my swing....

Been looking at some Nike Ignites which I found on sale here, and at a Pro Shop the guy I have been taking lessons from works at, so I can work out a deal to get fitted...

...I like the Hybrid as I hit my friends 14* 1iron Hybrid fantastic the other day...

...Looking at a setup of these clubs...the Hybrid...a new sand wedge (eventually) the Big Bertha C4 9* I have been using I borrowed until I upgrade this winter/spring...thingkin maybe a 9* Sasquatch or something...

...basically anyone have an opinions or ideas
