Default ($1k NL) Interesting river decision with trips.

Villian is unknown. Well, I've seen villian play exactly one hand, his BB b4 this one. He checked his option with A9 and bet and called a raise OOP on the flop of AK8, then called a $100 turn bet, then checked through on the rvr. He won vs A7.

Full Tilt Poker - No Limit Hold'em Cash Game - $5/$10 Blinds - 8 Players - (LegoPoker HH Converter)

SB: $1,241.00
BB: $157.10
UTG: $1,000.00
UTG+1: $970.00
Hero (MP1): $891.00
MP2: $975.00
CO: $207.80
BTN: $1,907.50

Preflop: Hero is dealt Q[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] J[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (8 Players)
2 folds, Hero raises to $35.00, 3 folds, SB calls $30.00, BB calls $25.00

Flop: ($105) 7[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] J[img]/images/graemlins/diamond.gif[/img] 9[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (3 Players)
SB checks, BB checks, Hero bets $70.00, SB calls $70.00, BB folds

Turn: ($245) A[img]/images/graemlins/club.gif[/img] (2 Players)
SB checks, Hero checks

River: ($245) J[img]/images/graemlins/heart.gif[/img] (2 Players)
SB bets $245.00, Hero ?

Thoughts on all streets, but what to do on the river?

I actually considered all 3 options here, which is pretty strange...

I'd call the river.

What makes you consider folding?

Just because to make this river pot bet he SHOULD have a really strong hand, like at least trips or better. TP tripped up on the rvr, there is a flush possible, there is an A out there, etc. OTOH it could be a bluff.

It really shouldn't be a hand like aces up, but you never know if people are playing 'correctly'....so I had to consider raising too esp after he showed a tendency to call raises with TPNK.

I see, a lot of times though a villain may see this as more of a reason to bet since you are less likely now to have TP.

Of course a bluff is in there, as is a flush. However, I think villains bluffing frequency increases a huge amount when you check the turn. I assume you checked the turn with the intention of calling most reasonable river bets on non-flush card rivers?

Yes that was the plan, but the pot bet threw me off a bit.

Edit: Although if the river completed the flush I prob would have called a small bet with my J high flush.

Another thing to consider is what we would do if the river came the same card but he only bet half pot? I think a small raise (like a minraise) might be more viable there because we could still fold to a poosh?

I'd call here too - definitely not raise. I expect to see something like J9/J7 more than I expect to see air.

i fold here. i would call a half-size pot bet, but betting the pot tells me he either has a flush or a boat.

Yeah, I think he has a flush more often than not, but you have 2:1 and theres plenty of other stuff that fits his moves. Would a half pot turn bet maybe have clarified things a bit?
