As you may already know, David Beckham is going to be playing his soccer in LA, starting in a few weeks time. I'm interested in whether this has recieved much media coverage in the US, and whether american OOTers are interested in the move.

Try Sporting Events, might get a better reception.

I'm more interested in his appeal as a celebrity to the US rather than anything to do with sport.

Yeah honestly I really get into the World Cup, but regular MLS I find almost aggressively boring. Unless he starts [censored] Paris Hilton I don't see him getting into the mainstream media spotlight that often.

No. The MLS is an irrelevant sports league in the US. He'll get some publicity early, but this will quickly fade unless there's some marriage issues. There will be some advertising spots as well. Ticket sales will increase to see him play among hardcore soccer fans (there aren't a ton, but enough to fill stadiums for a little while).

fwiw Victoria Beckham said she's looking forward to the move to LA because "over there people put you on a pedestal", apparently Spanish/UK people aren't fawningly sycophantic enough for these morons.
And yes, MLS sucks balls and no one man can improve that. |

I don't know anyone who watches MLS. It is definitely a very low tier sport in the US. If you brought to the US all the great soccer teams from around the world, I doubt many Americans would watch. Soccer is considered way too slow and 'weak' of a game here, especially compared to basketball and football. This is also one of the reasons baseball has dropped in popularity over the last couple decades. The reason some Americans watch soccer during the World Cup is the same reason we watch track and field events during the Olympics... U S A... U S A... U S A. Few care about the 100 meter dash if there isn't national pride involved. |

As Mason said, they probably have great publicists and will become a celebrity power couple in the US. Nobody will care about the MLS still.
I was at the gym and saw Beckham/Posh on Entertainment Tonight. It was definetely about some story that no one would give a [censored] about but through connections/publicists would get on a show like that. |
