ESPN Poll : Bonds, Griffey, or A-Rod in their prime?
i find it very interesting that Griffey Jr is leading with 57%, with A-Rod in second with 30%, and Bonds at 13%. to me, ARods VORP at SS or 3B is > Bonds' VORP in LF >> Griffey's VORP in CF. of course, this is all "in their prime" discussion, which would have to include assumptions about the league they are in.
edit : i guess "prime" discussion for Bonds would have to include pre- and post-"alleged steroid" periods. |

I would imagine Bonds has the highest VORP of any of these players in his prime. Going to BP to check it out.

I just glanced quickly. also, Bonds pre steroids peak years are about as good as peak arod. Arods value is hurt by moving from ss to 3rd. his monster 2005 is worth less than his nearly equal 2000 at SS. |

Re: ESPN Poll : Bonds, Griffey, or A-Rod in their prime?
After searching through BP, the following is a manually compiled list of the top 4 VORP for each of these players in descending order.
VORP Bonds 144 (2001) Bonds 138 (2002) Bonds 133 (2004) ARod 112 (1996) Bonds 104 (1993, 2003) ARod 104 (2001) ARod 102 (2000) ARod 91 (2005) Griffey 90 (1997) Griffey 86 (1993) Griffey 79 (1996) Griffey 76 (1998) This really isn't close. |

Re: ESPN Poll : Bonds, Griffey, or A-Rod in their prime?
People tend to overrate Griffey's prime years because they preceded McGwire/Sosa, and thus they don't have the taint of the "Steroid era". Fans are much less impressed by, and more skeptical about, offensive power numbers occurring post-1998. And even though Bonds (and A-Rod to a lesser degree) had great seasons pre-1998, they are more remembered for their play post-1998.

Re: ESPN Poll : Bonds, Griffey, or A-Rod in their prime?
from reading many of the comments here, I wouldve thought that Bonds had 4 or 5 rings. I wonder why that's not the case? Fact is none of these guys has been successful in the playoffs, but one of them was at least exciting - think Seattle vs Yankees, and then remember the spirit and competitiveness that Griffey brought to the table. As a matter of fact, I think that series alone make him the choice for me, but he had other great qualities in his prime too: his beautiful swing, his have fun at all times early years, and his defensive acrobatics to name a few.
