I wanna get big over summer
I'm a pretty skinny kid right now, and I wanna get big over summer. I'm about 160 lbs and 5'11. My friend tells me we will work out 5x a week, and drink protein. I will also be breakdancing often (I hear this will make muscle gain harder?) I'm just a beginner, so it will be a lot of cardio. Does this mean the breaking will cancel out the effects of working out? Broad question but how much weight can I expect to put on, giving time to cut up and stuff? Thanks.

to be honest, dont expect much...ive read various things, but maybe .25-.75lbs per week of muscle...if you are willing to get fat you can put on more...and yes lots of cardio will slow your gains, but if you eat enough you will grow...but it takes time to get big (years, not weeks)...

Breakdancing will use up a huge number of calories, so you'd better eat like crazy. You might also be so sore from lifting you don't want to breakdance sometimes, or can't. Keep in mind that you don't need to do sets to failure, or a million sets, or work out five days a week. That's fine if you're on steroids.

If you get too big it might make it hard to do some breakdancing moves. Breakdancing is [censored] hard. You are a beast if you can do alot of those moves.
I would rather be strong enough to breakdance than be big. |

I gained 30 lbs last summer while I was playing a lot of soccer. I didn't gain much fat either, so there's hope for you.

Are you serious with the breakdancing thing? If you are, I don't think bulking up would make too much sense.
Why not train in a fashion that would help with breakdancing first and make you look better as a side effect? Lots of pullups, pistols, gymnastic type training, deadlifts, etc. done with pure strength in mind. Theres all kinds of info on the web on this kind of training. I can post some links if you like. At your weight this stuff comes easier. All this tension heavy training will make you look good. Add in some sprints, some tabata stuff or jump rope like this dude, http://www.rosstraining.com/articles/jumprope2.htm Saying you want to have bigger biceps and look like Brad Pitt make you sound like all the metrosexualites in El Diablo's forum posting pictures of their track jackets and 19+ shoe collections for every possible occasion. I can't believe how big that thread is. |

I don't know how a breakdancer would train, but here are some articles that emphasize strength performance over bodybuilding. You can sift through all of it, visit the related forums, buy a book or two and probably get a good idea of what you might want to do. Get Ross's books or The Naked Warrior by Tsatsouline and you'll have a lot to do with hardly any equipment. I'm sure you'll figure out something way better than what your friend had in mind.
