Dr. Jack Kevorkian, who was convicted of 2nd degree murder for euthanizing the terminally ill, was released from prison today. I hadn't thought much about him since the late 90s, but now that he is a free man (albeit on parole), he'll probably be doing the talk show circuit and will certainly put the euthanasia debate back in the news.
Consider yourself warned. I also wonder what it is like for a man in his seventies to do eight years in state prison. "Dr. Death" Kevorkian leaves prison |

I cannot help but question the faith of those who so strongly believe in God and the afterlife while doing everything they can to avoid it for themselves and anybody around them.
EDIT: The law against assisted suicide is one of the most blatant contaminations of personal liberty. It's shameful that Dr. K was jailed, and the slow process for legalizing his practice is infuriating. The idea that I know how to handle your life better than you should be used at the most minimal of occurrences, but it seems that we increasingly gel the status quo into a coercive force against people who merely wish to live by their own standards. I'm sure that's off somewhat due to my lack of historical knowledge, but certainly the more involved i become in world affairs the more i see unjust involvement in peoples lives. |

[/ QUOTE ] The idea is that people who wish to die aren't quite right in the head, and are too burdened by misery to understand their own true wishes. And I think it's a valid. If you consider eternity, living for another another or day or year doesn't seem that bad, regardless of what you have to endure. If there isn't an afterlife, then you go to oblivion for the rest of time. Even pain and suffering shouldn't cause you to hasten that process. And if there is an afterlife, suicide may well be something like Dante's seventh circle As a community, people choose not to condone or assist such actions. I don't see that as a bad thing. |

I think Kevorkian might be our greatest American hero that's still living today.

Dr. K was willing to risk many years of his life behind bars to help complete strangers. I admire him for his convictions, and that he stood up for those convictions. |
