handicap parking question
Here is the situation:
I am in taco bell waiting for my food when a woman with three kids walks in after parking in the handicap spot out front. She goes to order and the cashier asks her if she has her handicap placard. She states "it is not a handicap spot unless there is a sign up, so I am not worried about it". Here is a paint rendering of spots: Is she going to get a ticket? How many of you would park there? Would you park in a handicap spot if there was no fine? |

Re: handicap parking question
I would not have parked there, but I'm surprised the employee mentioned it. I'm curious if it was a personal action or part of their training.

Re: handicap parking question
These types of laws are very dependent on the county. I know that there is potential she could be correct.

Re: handicap parking question
Is she going to get a ticket?
no, shes goign to be in taco bell for a maximum of 20 minutes so unless someone calls the cops shes obviously not getting one. I would not park there Would you park in a handicap spot if there was no fine? Most of the time no. If there was a situation where I couldn't find other parking, and there were multiple handicap spots open, I might consider it if I didn't think there was a chance that anyone else would be parking there. |

Re: handicap parking question
the only place i park in the handicap spot is at a small local store when i pop in to withdraw cash. there are about 8 parking spots, 2 of which are handicapped. there is zero danger of me getting a fine.
i assume 'no sign' isn't a valid excuse. |

Re: handicap parking question
my favorite spot is the one right next to the handicapped spots that is blue on one side and yellow/white on the other. it seems like half of the driving population assumes its a handicapped spot.
i'd never park in a handicapped spot, but i do park in the "for the employee of the month", "for expecting mothers", and "for parents with small children" spots with regularity, i'm never going to get a ticket in any of those. |

Re: handicap parking question
Parking in the handicap spot is a douche move, whether or not there is a ticket involved.
Is it a douche move to wait for someone in the handicap spot? I do this all the time, figuring that I will be able to move my car if someone needs the spot. (Obviously I don't do it if it's a long wait or if it is the only handicap spot available). |

Re: handicap parking question
Why would anyone park in a handicap spot? They arent just so they are closer to the store, they have extra room for liftgates to come out of vans etc. So in a crowded spot youd just deny people any spot so you can save a few steps? Sad.
