$2m+ Baccarat scam busted at Toronto area casino
Full story in Toronto Star article
"Baccarat cheats netted $2 million-plus after recruiting dealers, police allege" "U.S. authorities said the scheme targeted 18 gaming parlours in Canada, California, Nevada, Mississippi, Louisiana, Washington state, Indiana and Connecticut. The scheme netted $3.3 million (U.S.) from the American casinos, according to U.S. indictments unsealed yesterday." Any word on this in the US? Other casinos involved? |

The operation bears the mark of organized crime in the sense that those involved knew each other, Paterson said. "It took some co-operation and planning." [/ QUOTE ] LOL that is the same as saying "the operation bears the mark of organized crime in the sense that it was a crime, and it was organized." Barron |

One of the people tagged in this was the son of the mayor of Seattle.
"Among those named in the indictments unsealed Thursday were casino card dealers and pit bosses, including Jacob Nickels, 25, the son of Seattle Mayor Greg Nickels, who prosecutors say were bribed to participate in the plot. |

[/ QUOTE ] "Cold decks" are the other obvious method, although MUCH more dangerous, as it entails actually smuggling an entire shoe of cards in and swapping it with the casino's shoe. Takes iron balls, to be sure. The fact that technology was mentioned with the false shuffle would lead me to believe the computer deck I described earlier is more likely, however, but then again, often baccarat cards are used once and discarded, ( they get bent to hell by superstitious players if allowed), so it seems to come down to whether the casino in question re-used baccarat cards or not. If they DO re-use, it was a computer replay deck, ( there is a specific term for this that escapes me currently...), and if they only use cards once, it was a cold deck brought in. |
