There is definitely something to be said for an entertaining lunatic athlete. I think Scott Olsen has to be one of the craziest dudes playing baseball today. Chase Utley stepped out on him once or twice during an AB and Olsen just stopped pitching and started screaming at Utley. This to me is indicative of personal awesomeness and clearly someone who I want to watch play. Living in New York I don't get to see too many of the Marlins games so I'm not sure how often Olsen throws at guys, etc. but this is clearly one of the more entertaining nutjobs in baseball. IMO baseball could use a little bit more of this. I don't think there was anyone watching who didn't thoroughly enjoy the Yankees/Red Sox brawl when Pedro tossed Don Zimmer to the ground.
So do any of you guys enjoy periodically seeing a wackjob like Olsen? Who are some of your other favorite out-there, crazy athletes? I realize coaches have a longer track record of this sort of thing ("PLAYOFFS??!?!!", etc) so feel free to include them as well. Also any links to news stories of how crazy Scott Olsen is will go a long way towards my ordering a "Crazy Scott Olsen" custom jersey from the Marlins website, lol. |

Doc Ellis
pitched a no-hitter on acid, also started throwing at cincinnati reds for no good reason - i think he hit 3 guys and threw behind one other guy before getting yanked. |

[/ QUOTE ] I caught part of an interview with him on ESPN about 10 years ago and it was the funniest thing I've ever seen. I don't understand why they don't re-run it periodically. The incident with the Reds had some type of racial background--I don't recall the details. Doc had announced in advance that he was going to hit them all. After he hit Rose (I think) and Morgan stepped up, his catcher (Sanguillen?) warned Morgan to watch out. Morgan said, "Aww, he won't hit me--I'm a brother." During the interview, Ellis proudly exclaimed, "I got him with the first pitch!" |

Heh, anyone see the Marlins-Phillies last night. I thought Olsen was going to lose it. It was broken up and everyone was going back into the dugouts - he was still yelling.

Olsen hates the Phillies for some reason. He said before the game that if they did anything at all he didn't like, call time, walk to first, he was going to throw at them.
