Default whatever

20/40 live poker from a couple days ago.

some guy i don't know, but is probably bad open limps in mp. an older playing weak-ish guy limps in right after him. i raise it up on the button with A9. blinds get out of the way. 3 way action.

flop AKK rainbow

first guy checks. second guy bets. i call. other guy calls.

turn: 6

first guy checks. second guy bets. i call. other guy calls.

river 8

first guy fumbles around with his chips and now bets. second guy calls without much thought and then i fold without much thought, but maybe i should have thought?

I'd ignore the guy who called. I think you've got him beat most of the time. The key is would this guy bluff into the field, and would he *not* checkraise a king after you had already called the turn. But I think it comes down to how you feel vs. the river bettor. In other words, had the other guy folded, would you have folded so quickly?

I don't like preflop, isn't this usually a fold? As played I would do the same

No not against limping donkies. Raise it up. We are in position and play good. They are out of position and play bad.

I thought CDC played postflop well. Im not a fan of preflop either. I would fold A9o in this spot, but that doesnt mean thats the right play. I have no evidence to support the idea that folding here is better than raising. I think online this will usually be a clear fold becuz even if we have an equity edge preflop it will usually be very hard to cash in on that edge postflop due to the general higher aggressive activity inherent in online play.

Hand values can change alot in a live setting simply becuz its so much easier to play optimally due to the higher passivity/honesty in most games. Some hands that are clearly not profitable online may be profitable live.

Of course then you have the higher rake involved in live play that eats into the value of all hands making some profitable spots online unprofitable in live play.

It is hard for me to say which factor should get a greater weighting when I decide to play a hand or not.

For now I will assume that A9o is a fold in this spot becuz I dont know any better. Whenever I have a decision preflop and I dont know what the best line is between folding and doing something else, I almost always take the lower variance route and fold.

FWIW, ATo is an auto-raise for me in this spot, and I see nothing wrong with raising A9s here.

my general philosophy in most live games is that u should play your button if they let you. fwiw, if ATo is an "auto"-raise for you, A9o can't be that far behind.
