Jimmy Buffett is as mediocre a musician as they come. Cheesy as hell, too. You might want to start with his catalogue.

Weezer - "Buddy Holly", "Sweater Song"
Bloodhound Gang - "Fire, Water, Burn" Jack Johnson - "Flake" (J.J. has a unique, rhythmic strumming style... takes some practice to learn but definitely worth it.) |

Anything by Creedence.
A lot of Skynyrd (i.e. Sweet Home Alabama, Gimme 3 steps) Quite a few Beatles tunes are easy enough to strum chords to. 90% of Bon Jovi songs translate well to acoustic (if they aren't already acoustic songs like Wanted..). You need some pipes for the good ones tho. Check out the tab finder at ultimate-guitar.com, print some off (copy and paste to notepad, first) and you'll be in good shape. The key is to pick songs that everyone can sing, or at least sing along with. |

American Pie - Don McLean
Don't Look Back in Anger and Wonderwall - Oasis Alive - Pearl Jam The Hook, Run Around - Blue Traveller You were meant for me - Jewel (big hit if there are girls who like to sing). In the right crowd the same can be said for I'm the One who Wants to Be With You by Mr. Big. I'll post again if I think of some more. edit: Also, it's not imperative that everyone in the group knows all the words to the verses, as long as you learn all the words so that you can carry the song through the parts that people tend to forget. All they need is to be able to belt out the chorus with you and pick and choose on the verses they remember. edit2: thought of a few more Breakfast at Tiffany's - Deep Blue Something Free Fallin' - Tom Petty (vocals might be a stretch) Last Dance with Mary Jane - Tom Petty |

Walking After Midnight by Patsy Cline is really easy. The lyrics are easy too. I think Willie Nelson wrote it.
And what's that song by the White Stripes that was the theme to Napoleon Dynamite? Jack Johnson covered it on the Curious George soundtrack. I forget the name but that's an easy one too. There's lots of Johnny Cash that's easy too. And especially popular now that his biographical movie was such a big hit. |
