Does the run count?
This situation came up in my college baseball game wed:
Runners on 1st and 3rd, 1 out. Batter hits a fly ball to center, runner on 3rd tags but the runner on 1st thinks there are already 2 outs. centerfielder catches the ball and throws to 1st, and the runner is thrown out on a force at 1st. the runner on 3rd crossed home before the 3rd out was recorded. Does the run count? Can someone quote the rule? thanks. |

Re: Does the run count?
The run shouldn't count, unless I'm a complete idiot, which is possible.

Re: Does the run count?
You play college baseball and you don't know that the run doesn't count? I simply can't believe that. Was there actual controversy involved in the call?

Re: Does the run count?
Not unusual or a big deal stepbang.
Just like all the 'experts' in the stands who start freaking out for a balk every time the pitcher fakes a throw to 3rd or 2nd. Also the same for every guy who screams about how awful the 3rd base coach is for not sending the runner even if it was pretty damn obvious he had very little chance of scoring. I try not to get too out of hand on a baseball rule if I honestly don't know the answer. And regarding the 'force' at 1st for the runner tagging-up and whether or not the run counted I can honestly say I wasn't sure. |

Re: Does the run count?
This thread is funny.
It's also interesting to note that, except at first, if you tag someone instead of touching the bag where there'd be a force out, a run would count if it crosses. I mention this because apparently it's really hard to understand. My partner ejected a coach today after he called me a "16 year old that shouldn't even be able to ump tee-ball" after I made this call. This was the first inning and the first call I'd actually made, other than obvious stuff. Quite funny. |

Re: Does the run count?
lippy,
That's why MLB put this exact example in their rulebook, to remove the confusion! |

Re: Does the run count?
From MLB's rulebook:
7.12 Unless two are out, the status of a following runner is not affected by a preceding runner’s failure to touch or retouch a base. If, upon appeal, the preceding runner is the third out, no runners following him shall score. If such third out is the result of a force play, neither preceding nor following runners shall score. |
