I know there's some recruiters/hiring managers on here, so maybe they can weigh in.
I've been offered a new job, and I'm in the process of salary negotiations. One of the things I would like to know (not the most important, obviously) is whether I get an office or a cube. Their office space has both, and I'm coming in at a management level. Is there a tactful way to ask about this? Or is it just a case of show up day 1, and see what you get??? |

There are two sides to this. If it doesn't matter to you don't bother asking. If it does matter to you and you think asking whether you get an office or a cube is going to change their opinion of you in a negative way you really don't want to work there.

Ask them to show you your workspace before you accept.

You should definitely ask for a tour of the office and your workspace. This is completely reasonable. You can even express displeasure with the cube they show you if that's the case. F*ck being nice. If you deserve an office ask for an office.

Solid advice all. Thanks.

You could always just ask about the office vs cube.
I'd expect most all companies to have space standards that they try to follow so you can figure out where you stand. If they have fairly rigid space guidlines, you might be better off not whining for an office. What tier of mgt. are you being hired in at? Will your job require a lot of phone time/private conversations? |

Just ask. They know the answer.

DO NOT ASK. You should assume you are in an OFFICE. Ask for a tour, and on the tour, ask them to point out your OFFICE. If they point to a cube, say something like "Oh, I haven't worked in a cube in YEARS."
Anything else may plant doubt in their minds about your qualifications... |

It's not a very tall heirarchy. Most of the employees are designers. The workspace is very open concept, with some offices around the perimeter. I guess you would consider my role mid-management - I direct report to VP of ops. I think I'll go with the 'where would I be working?' approach, and act surprised if it's not an office.
That, or I'll just find the biggest office in the place, and move my [censored] in when no one's watching. |
