Default let\'s fill out the soundtrack for my short film

So, I've probably listened to 300 different artists on MySpace in looking for the perfect music for gravida and have settled on one song from a guy I already know.

Btw, if you ever just feel like looking for fantastic new music, follow the friend links on MySpace. There's a ton of great, great music out there. Just, none of it matches what I'm looking for. In the interests of being cool, here's some links of people in the general direction (some I'm not convinced won't work). enjoy.

but, yeah, something like that.

I'm having trouble pinning down the exact qualities i'm looking for, but I've been describing it lately as a "cross between Andrew Bird and Nina Simone, with a female voice and a strong strings component"...one of the songs has to be played over a date montage

the trick, though, is 2-pronged: one, the song has to fit the measured tone of the film. the problem with Jaymay, for example, is that she's a bit too perky. two, it has to be something I can get easily (and cheaply, seeing as we're already over budget...damn deer), meaning the artist has to be unsigned, or self-distributed, but can't be, you know, Joanna Newsom or anyone that well-known (without some luck/connections/etc or something)

i figure the more unknown the better, since i'm wary of using songs people are already familiar with, and an unknown person might get really excited about the project and tell all their friends. someone with a track record would more likely be like, "meh, my song's in this film...whatever."

so, anyone got some suggestions? let's cast a wide net. if nothing else, we get to discover new music.

Pryor,

First, is the song you are already using one on that guy's Myspace page? If so, which one?

Second, how much more music are you looking for? Just a song to play over the date montage? It might be helpful if you could name a few specific songs by more well known artists that sound kind of like what you are looking for so that we know what mood/tempo you have in mind.

Also, by "more well known" I don't necessarily mean mainstream, just someone who has some level of national exposure, like a Joanna Newsom.

the song I'm using is "Careless Love" for the end credits

i need an opening credits song, a montage song, and some assorted scoring, but i think i've got the scoring covered...maybe one more for mood, etc.

part of the problem is i don't exactly know what i want, but 99% of stuff i hear, i instantly know won't work...it doesn't make it easy, i know

but...some songs that are close in tone (even if the voices, etc are wrong)

"How to Fight Lonliness"-wilco
"Paper Moon"-whiskeytown
"The Lines of My Earth"-Sixpence None the Richer
maybe something like the Rufus Wainright "Poses" album
"Priest Alley Song"-Red House Painters
"Lilac Wine"-Nina Simone
"River Man"-Nick Drake
"Cayman Islands"-Kings of Convenience
"Morningwatch"-Dolorean

kind of like that
