Default registering your own domain name - recommendations?

I know Godaddy is fashionable - thinking if there's anyone better -

I'll also need a place to host the website - Yahoo is too expensive in my book - so I'm just looking for a good cheap web hosting solution

I really like GoDaddy. When I saw your title, I was hoping to be able to recommend them; when I see that you're asking if there's anything better, I guess my answer is "no".

If you enjoy spam -- try Network Solutions. They sent a bunch of it out...

I've only looked for registration. I don't know anything about hosting. Sorry. There's another thread in CTH about hosting, with a link.

1and1 is not. They auto charge you for renewals and services, and good luck transferring a domain away from them, or even canceling your service, you have to jump through hoops, by far the worst host/registrar I've used.

HostGator and Bluehost are very very good (and cheap). I started out with some other host, but realized that they were really compared to my current solution (hostgator).

Edit: I use namecheap for registering new domains (google for coupons) . Its best to use a separate company to buy your domain, incase you decide to change hosts.
