Default \"Selig earned $14.5 million in fiscal \'05\"

One can only assume he made even more last year. Why are they paying this guy so much? Is he doing something smart behind the scenes that I'm missing? He seems like an awful commissioner to me...

He is getting payed about 1/3 of what the NFL is paying its 840 employees and more then all 56 NHL employees combined! (for that year... that was during the NHL lockout though)
Story here...

The owners are probably paying him that much because he's worth it.

To oversimplify, Selig is terrible for baseball as a game but excellent for baseball as a business.

Baseball (the business) is fat and happy because of the insane TV contracts they keep getting. As long as the networks are tripping over themselves to buy broadcast rights and broadcast the games despite huge losses, MLB will continue to be awash in money and Selig will think he's really smart and a good commissioner.

How has HE made them money though? It might just be that I don't fully understand the commissioner's role... but as far as I can tell he doesn't seem to be very good at it.

Also, kb4z, can you really compare the baseball commissioner to a CEO? Technically aren't all the teams separate organizations?

sure, there are differences. but it's certainly a full time job,and people who are qualified enough to get 32 billionares on the same page don't come cheap.

on top of this there are plenty of MLB wide decisions that need to be made - TV contracts, and partnernsips for example, and revenue sharing, expansion plans, etc.

basically my point is that people qualified enough to do all this aren't going to cost $500k a year. $14m is a lot, sure, but I would guessed at least a few million.
