Default Bryant vs Jordan ... yes, again.

Jemele Hill on Page2

From the writer:
[ QUOTE ]
(5) And yes, I still believe Kobe is a better player. This is an eyeball argument. Kobe will never be the best player who played the game. That achievement belongs to MJ alone. He'll never impact the world the way MJ did. But from a skill perspective, Kobe has MJ beat.

[/ QUOTE ]

The article ends with this e-mail from a reader:
[ QUOTE ]
Hello, I'm Sharone Wright, a former top-six pick in the NBA. I was around Kobe my first and second year with the 76ers (Bryant worked out with the 76ers when he was in high school). Kobe would be the first to be at practice and he would be the last to leave. You want to talk about a will to win? This kid was amazing. He has a mad streak only the good ones have. When he wants to stop you, he will. When he wants 50, he'll give you 50. Simple as that. "I played a lot of games against Jordan, and truthfully Michael was the greatest I've ever seen, but Kobe has everything and even more to his game. The comparisons are so equal. So many critics let their displeasure for Kobe in his personal life blind them when it comes to his game and his place as one of the top-three players of all time. Kobe should be going on his fourth MVP, but they are so blinded by what their perception of Kobe is. Say what you want, but poll 20 NBA players right now, the ones that don't hold a grudge against Kobe, and they will tell you that it isn't even close to him and another player in the league. That's real talk for you."

[/ QUOTE ]

Tex Winter on Lakernoise Blog

[ QUOTE ]
Another of my recent columns said Bryant’s four-game streak of 50-point games was more impressive than Wilt Chamberlain’s seven-game streak in 1961-62. Winter again agreed: “It is more impressive. Wilt’s streak was more about gimmickry that season. Kobe’s gotten these points against tough competition (Winter thinks just about all NBA team offer superior competition in this age, including the Memphis Grizzlies), which is something else Wilt didn’t face, not consistently.”

[/ QUOTE ]

Which player is more skilled? ... edited in hopes this poll doesn't go down the crapper.

sorry, like zod said, i meant shaq, shoulda been more clear i guess...

even from a skill standpoint, MJ was more polished, though kobe is definitely not lacking in this area...

as for better player...again, kobe needed shaq for his success much more so than jordan needed pippen (and i'm a huge pippen fan)...also, seeing what MJ did for the game, arguing jordan and kobe on any level is not really fair...

also, i take "skilled" maybe more loosely than some...MJ made players around him better (sounds over-used, but still) and kobe hasn't done this to nearly the same degree...

that doesn't make any sense. MJ is the best player ever, but Kobe is better?

I think he's saying that Kobe is more talented than MJ, but b/c of other factors he'll never be as good a basketball player. Who knows what these factors are - drive, determination, etc? Well, these factors count, often as much as jump shooting or passing skills.

I might as well say that Len Bias is the best basketball player ever b/c he had the potential to be. (exaggerated, obv, but the point is the same)
