Default Help my hair not suck.

I have had horrible hair my entire life. I am currently on a self improvement streak. I have inproved my eating and excercise habits and I am beginning to dress better. My hair is in dire need of improvement.

My hair timeline:

Age 5-13: Revenge of the Nerds style complete with uncontrollable cowlick in back.

Age 13-20: Shaved bald.

Age 20-current: 1 guard on sides, 5 guard on top, mat it down after showering.

Current abomination:

I'm going in for a haircut today and I want some ideas on what to do with it.

I haven't touched hair product in 11 years. I never actually learned how to take care of my hair. My last girlfriend made fun of me because my hair sucked so bad.

OOT, please help me make my hair look good.

Specific questions:

- What are hip hair styles and what do you tell the stylist?

-What products should I use to get the desired look for my chosen hairstyle?

What shampoos and conditioners are best?

Need a face/profile shot too. Hair frames your face, so w/o it its hard to say.

woah, I guess you can add that little quip to the things you do that are gay thread.

You need a better shot of yourself...I think most hairstyles are dependent on what the person looks like.

Edit: quids beat me to it.

Step 1: Don't get the haircut
Step 2: Grow, grow, grow
Step 3: Do something with it

I would definitely suggest flipping it up in the front, I'll add comparison pix.

OP -

Could you post pictures of yourself w/ the shaved head at age 20? Maybe we could use that as a basis to decide whether you should shave it down close or let it grow out.
