I just got a letter in the mail from the Quebec government today calling me up for jury duty. It says I must present myself on May 14th for the selection process, but im pretty sure as a college student ill be able to get out of it considering im registered for a summer course.
But it seems like it would be a very irritating yet interesting thing to do. In Canada, juries are only used for criminal cases so at least you get something juicy. For example, my grandfather was a juror on a man-slaughter case about 15 years ago. Im sure you guys have done this. So any good stories, or at least good ways to get out of it? |

In the US, if you read the form you can defer for one full year without giving a reason. I did that and then kind of regretted it after viewing some jury deliberation videos in class. I wish I could have been a part of it.
Then I remembered the few times I have sat in on trials and wishing I could stab my eye with a fork. One consisted of three hours of reading a witness back his deposition testimony and him saying he didn't remember saying any of it. Then add in that everything had to be translated. At least in US, being a student probably won't matter, unless you run your own business it probably won't get you out of it. If you want out, just say how you are an anarchist or something and will never find anyone guilty. |

I was on a jury for about 4 days a couple of years ago. During selection I just assumed that they would turn me down (I lived 2 blocks from the crime scene) but they didn't. I can feel confident saying that I pretty much convinced about half the jurors that the defendant was guilty.
The whole experience was eye-opening enough for me where I would never want to go to a jury trial for any litigation I considered important. |

All,
Why is everyone so opposed to jury duty? I get called about once a year and never try to get out of it. So far I have yet to be picked for a trial. If I am in the running for one that will be really long I will get out of it due to the impact it will have on my company and employees. But if I get selected for a short one I'll serve. |
