What action can/should I take against this??
This has happened to me a few times in live games and was just wondering if there are any rules on it.
I play tournaments at my university for small stakes so obviously there isn't a tournament director as such, but there have been hands where say I'm involved in a pot with an average to poor player with a marginal/strongish hand. Someone who is not involved in the hand might say "I think you have pocket tens" and sometimes they aren't far wrong. It really annoys me because sometimes the guy I'm in the pot with will gain from this information when otherwise I might have taken the pot. Now obviously there's not much that can be done at a small stakes university tournament, but if I was playing in a cardroom what should I do here? Do I have the right to tell the guy to shut up? Could he be punished in some way? (obviously not like 10 lashes with a whip, but maybe a time penalty or something?)It annoys me that certain people dont obey basic ettiquette (shut up if you're not in the hand) and often it can cost me money, or so it seems to me. Thanks in advance. |

If you cannot figure out the answer to your question, you may want to make sure its actually college you are attending, and not pre school. Tell them to STFU...one player to a hand, when they are out of the hand even more so. Bottom line - STFU.

Yes Sherlock, I realise they are in the wrong, but what I don't know about is what the casino or cardroom has to say about it. Would he receive a penalty of some sort if reported? Pre school hahaha, your post was quite funny for me to read. Certainly put me in my place. Any help would be appreciated.

Use common sense. Tell him to STFU. If that doesn't work, then your pretty much SOL unless you want to escalate to a physical confrontation since you are not playing a structured game.
You should balance the negative impact of villian's comments (if any) with the potential loss of action and possible loss of invite into the game. If you were playing in a casino, then you could complain to the dealer/floor after the hand, and after asking him to STFU. Just be careful how you say it, you might get a penalty for foul language. If this was a casino/card room, he would probably get a warning from the floor. |

Re: What action can/should I take against this??
Its very much a common sense situation. I just find it very hard to believe that you cannot figure this out yourself. The times I have seen people acting like this the dealer instructed them to not comment on a hand in progress - along with the rest of the table telling them to STFU. What would you do if you were playing a game of american pool (8 ball) and you are about to take the winning shot, and your opponites friend gets up in front of you just off the edge of the table and starts sharking you, what would you do? Or you are shooting free throws, and someone gets in your face, and starts taunting you to miss...how do you deal with that? Simple common sense. Tell them to STFU period. I also was told it was really Mr. Watson that was the true brains behind Sherlok holms...is that true?

[/ QUOTE ] I think the other replies missed your point. In a B&M environment this will be dealt with depending on the house rules. The room I was last with had a "No commenting on a hand in progress" rule for tourneys (basically a "one player to hand" rule). Violate that and you got a warning. Second offense, penalty. I'm sort of in the middle on this one. Why not let players spew BS like they would in a cash game? On the other hand, you go bust and yer out...outside influence could mean a lot. In a real poker room, if you had a problem with a situation like this, insist that the floor be called and you'll get the issue resolved based on the house rules. |

Depends on the casino. Most players aren't nearly as rude as the people that responded to your post. |

Re: What action can/should I take against this??
Thanks for the replies. It just seems to me it's something that ought to be taken very seriously as it can ruin a hand for a player. The other day I raised on the button with KK trying my best to make it look like a steal, got a caller and the flop came K Q 8 rainbow. bb Checked and I checked. Just then some clever clogs says " He never checks the flop in position, he must have a monster" Thanks for that mate!! Not only was he right but he convinced the bb to lay down a QJ which he otherwise might have shipped a few chips in my direction. It seems by the time any form of penalty occurs, the damage has already been done. It annoys me a lot.

[/ QUOTE ] But there's the question: are your opponents there to take poker seriously, or to socialize and have fun? In a cardroom setting, you're right, and most players will agree with you. But if the main objective of the players in a low-stakes, informal tourney is to engage in an enjoyable activity without great concern about the outcome, enforcing stringent rules and rebuking those who break them makes the game less fun. |
