I just caught this movie last night and I have to ask - it's a joke, right? I mean, I couldn't help but thinking "I must be getting levelled here". At first I thought it was just a cheesy action flick, but some of the dialogue really put it over the top:
"I expect the best and I give the best. Here's the beer. Here's the entertainment. Now have fun. That's an order." "You're some sort of big, fat, smart-bug, aren't you?" Private Sugar Watkins: Gimme the nuke Johnny Rico: You trying to be a hero, Watkins? Private Sugar Watkins: Just trying to kill some bugs, sir. Zander: My God. How could this happen? Carmen: We thought we were smarter than the Bugs. I have to believe that it's a satire on the genre, and not to be taken seriously. Right? |

At least you got it. Yes it's satire. The director Paul Verhoeven has stated so in many interviews.

It's not so much a satire on the action genre but an interesting look at the military in general. The book does a much better job at getting it's point across (obviously, because it's a full length book and not a 2 hour movie.) I think the movie does a good job at getting across the Spartan attitude of the Mobile Infantry.
So to answer your question: No, not to be taken seriously, but that doesn't mean it's a complete joke either. ps. Denise Richards ![]() ![]() |

From Wiki[ QUOTE ] the purpose of satire is not primarily humour but criticism of an event, an individual or a group in a clever manner. [/ QUOTE ] The book 1984 is a satire, but it's not funny or has jokes. |

He asked if it was a satire on action flicks.

When I saw this movie when I was younger, I thought it was idiotic and a waste of money/time. Now when I see it I can appreciate it it a lot more and I think it does its job (of parody/satire whatev) quite nicely...the terrible acting (Johnny Rico FTW) just adds to the effect if you ask me.

[/ QUOTE ] While you're at it, how about you go [censored] yourself? I know what a satire is, and 1984 doesn't seem to qualify in any obvious way. I'd be interested in knowing what the target of the satire is; it couldn't be a satire of fascisim, since the book is about the protaginist's rejection of the fascist state. So the rejection of fascism isn't ironic, it's explicit. Seriously, what's the target of 1984's satire? |
