Default Antiques Roadshow

I have always liked watching the tv show, Antiques Roadshow. The funny thing is I don't think I own any true antiques or even collectibles for that matter. Is that even possible? I think we all have tons we just don't consider them interesting as we see them everyday.

Anyways I would enjoy seeing or hearing about any antiques or collectibles fellow loungers might have. Don't worry if you think it is not valuable. Researching it and finding out is the funnest part. I am going to examine my stuff closer I must have something.

I'm amazed you have it in the US. Wel9e had this for years in the UK, and it's very amusing watching people hoping the stuff they bring is worth a fortune. The UK one is very cosy and English - I bet it'd crack you guys up.

Actually American PBS seems to show the British version almost as frequently as the US version. My wife is a big fan and I end up watching as well when it's on and I'm sitting at the computer.

My absolute favorite is when the appraisers shoot down some arrogant smug SOB who ended up paying big money for something they thought was worth even more...only to find out it's a forgery. There was an asian lady on once who had paid $10,000 for a pair of extremely old Chinese pieces (a bowl and a plate I think) from something like 1300 BC. The appraiser went on and on about how rare they were and how valuable they were...if they'd been real. The look on the poor lady's face went from smug and bitchy to shocked in half a second...as her 10K stuff ended up being worth about $1500 and not hundreds of thousands...

This was one of the first episodes I ever watched and I was laughing my ass off. Love this show despite not owning any antiques and knowing absolutely nothing about the business. Coolest thing I saw was that someone had an old Willie Mays game jersey from when he was in the minors.

This is cool. I have 3 things in mind that might be appropriate for this thread. Is there a cut-off for the year that makes a thing "antique"? I have a lot of junk at home that might be antique, don't know.

Anyway, when I get home I will see if my camera is charged. I will try to post a couple of mine tonight.

(have a virus on my computer so keep your fingers crossed that I can even get on the internet! This morning it was taking at least 10 minutes to connect)

This sucks.

I really like this thread, and have searched high and low and not found a single thing that can be considered even close to an antique. Even myself doesn't count (I'm more 'classic' than an 'antique')

I'd love to see more though.

This is one of the shows on my DVR list. With the short segments it's convenient to watch for 5 minutes or 15 minutes before you go to sleep.

A friend and I took some stuff to a taping probably 8-10 years ago in St. Paul. At that time you could bring two items, and neither of mine was worth much.

It's been a while, but the husband and I like to putter around in antique shops and have picked up quite a few items over time. Nothing expensive, just things we like or find interesting. I have to get some work done, but I'll try to get some picutres taken and posted later.

100 years is the general minimum for "antique", however that is not a strict rule. In fact quite a few items on the Roadshow are much less than 100 years old, i.e. wwII items.

My wife and I have been watching the show for years. Our favorite appraiser is the old English chap. Interestingly enough, neither one of us collect anything but dust.

My favorite show is when a woman thought she had a pocket watch from notorious outlaw, Pancho Villa. Even after the appraiser gave a lenthy explanation of how it could not possibly be Villa's watch, the woman (apparently not listening) kept insisting it was so.

Ok Stuey, I'm going to try to post something in here. But it turns out I don't really have any "antiques", just maybe what you'd call collectibles.

My boyfriend has a lot of old crap which I assume is antique. He's into collecting the weirdest stuff at antique malls and garage sales. Everything from old Pachinko machines, to old refrigerators to 1950's furniture. One of the oddest things he owns is an old bowling ball return that looks like something out of the Jetson's show.

Anyone else into 1950s furniture? I have this group of friends who are really into it. They sit around getting high and talking about 50's furniture. It's weird as hell. Also, my dad really liked this kind of furniture when he was alive.

This is the kind of stuff they like to collect - by Charles Eames and George Nelson (my friend actually owns 2 of these clocks).

I have this shadow box that my boyfriend got for me. You guys know what that is? Now I don't even like shadow boxes and I told him "that's kinda ugly if you want to know the truth." He goes "ARE YOU KIDDING? That's cool as [censored]! That is exactly like the one Kramer has in his apartment!"

So because Kramer has one exactly like it in his apartment, I now have a shadow box sitting in my spare room. Oh joy. I'm wondering if he actually wants me to display that thing

Who else collects stuff around here? Dom collects ashtrays, right? Dom, post some pics!
