Default freezing during boot

My Dell notebook has recently been freezing up a lot while booting. It gets stuck on the first screen with the Dell logo and hit F2 to enter setup, etc. I have to turn it off via the power button and reboot it. I'd say this is happening almost half the time I start my computer.

I run Adaware/Spybot/AVG very regularly, and don't visit and sketchy websites or think I have spyware/virus.

The notebook is almost 2 years old.

Any ideas why this is happening?

The boot partition on your HD could be messed up. If you have a Windows cd then try to run a repair install. You can eliminate a lot of possibilities in one step by doing so.

Or if you can get it to boot then run check disk.

posted the OP on my gf's account by accident

So yeah, this happens every time I turn on the notebook. The little progress bar that fills up under the Dell icon fills to the same spot and then freezes. I manually turn off the notebook, and during the next boot that bar fills up much more slowly, but it eventually boots to Windows and everything is fine.

chkdsk passed

So should I reinstall xp or just repair it? and this is a sign of a bad HD/dying notebook?

This may be a silly question, but do you have any USB devices connected to your PC during bootup (like an iPod)? If so disconnect them all and reboot. If it is getting stuck before the Windows XP screen, then your system is attempting to enumerate a drive that has no boot partition or is faulty. Since it is happening only half of the time, this is what I am suspecting.

Let me know if that helps.

Thanks

So the problem seems to be a USB keyboard I have started using with my notebook. Is there anything I can do to remedy the situation?
