very simple.
Can you sign checks over. If I want to cash a check in friends name, what does he need to do? |

Your friend can sign his name in the endorsement line. Sometimes banks request his phone number and/or address as well. It should be easy as that.

Recent experience tells me that this is sometimes quite difficult to do (as in impossible)

Most institutions have stopped accepting signed over checks altogether, so be sure to ask first before doing anything. The usual exception is if you have an account with the institution and you have enough funds in your account to cover the check. They may or may not require your friend to be present with ID as well.
Normally, your friend needs to endorse the check, write "Pay to the order of <your name>" and then you endorse it under that. |

I usually just deposit by atm whenever I'm concerned that it might be a problem. I'd rather get a phone call than deal with an endless parade of idiots at the bank.
