Venetian: $1 Max Rake for 8-16 & 15-30; $2 Time for 30-60 & 60-120

In an effort to become the premiere Las Vegas poker room for middle limit hold ‘em, the Venetian is embarking on an ambitious strategy to seize the market.

On Friday, March 9, Venetian poker room management will announce their new promotion at their Deep Stack Extravaganza tournament. Officially beginning on April 1 (and unofficially beginning immediately), the Venetian is making a commitment to dramatically reduce rake for middle limit hold ‘em games through the rest of 2007.

8-16 and 15-30 limit hold ‘em games will have a maximum rake of $1 through the end of May. Likewise, 30-60 and 60-120 limit hold ‘em will have a time charge of $2. By comparison, rakes in all middle limit games in Las Vegas are currently at a maximum of $4. The time charge in the Bellagio 30-60 game is $6. In the 60-120 game, time is $7.

The Venetian’s promotion to offer reduced rake continues through December according to the schedule below (which is from a letter to players to be distributed on Friday to introduce the promotion). Advertisements in Card Player and Poker Player magazines will be purchased to support the promotion.

Wrong.

The Venetian will be getting more 8/16 to 30/60 players now. Many of those players will also play blackjack, slots, craps etc and spend more time and money in the Venetian casino.

More importantly, the poker room will still make a minimum profit with the $1 rake. Live poker tables cost $9-$12/hour to run (according to Caesars Palace's poker room manager). They should be able to drop >$12 per hour with a $1 max rake.

Also, this looks like any other promotion. By years end they will be up to $3 rake and it seems as if they will go to $4 next year anyway. I would be curious to hear from people who play there as to whether this promotion draws a broad spectrum of players including fish or better players who are rake conscious.
