Almost fight and strong beer month trip report
OK, so after watching the USA v. Japan soccer match, we decide to grab a couple of pints, since Feburary is Strong Beer Month at 21st amendment and Magnolia Pub.
I'll focus on the beer first. Golden Doom Belgian Tripel - too sweet, not quite right. I generally like Belgian style beer a lot, didn't dig this. Double Trouble Imperial I.P.A. - solid beer, good IPA, not super interesting. Mac's Strong Scotch Ale - decent Ale, again, nothing super special about it. Lower De Boom Barley Wine - very good. Hendrik's Russian Imperial Espresso Stout - by far the tastiest beer, this is one of the best stouts I've ever had. Tweezer Tripel (9.0%) - solid Promised Land Imperial IPA (10.0%) - so-so, could be a little smoother Old Thunderpussy Barleywine (11.9%) - tasty, i prefer the 21st amendment one though Slipping Into Darkness (8.0%) - very, very good. my second favorite beer of the group. Smokestack Lightning (9.1%) - stout that is not as good as the 21st amendment stout, seemed a little too salty and the flavor was not as robust. OK, on to the almost fight. There's a line to get in at the packed bar. This one guy, is at the door asking if he can get a smoke then go back in, and the door guy is explaining that everyone has to go to the back of the line if they step out. This guy looks a little like Hugh Grant, sort of a foppy-haird "of the manor" look and even has a sweater tied around his shoulders (maybe a cardigan!) - and a thick British accent. A couple of guys in the line start mouthing off a bit. This guys look like early 20s ex-frat boys who probably work in consulting or something now. The one with the biggest smart mouth looks a little like Sue from Swingers. Another one looks a little like Rob. Pretty clean cut white guys. At one point, dude says something like "How about you open your tab for everyone in line, then you can go back in?" The British guy says "Well, if I thought you were nice chaps, I would happily buy you a beer, but you have been so rude, why would I ever buy a beer for such rude chaps?" At this point the frat boys (4 or 5 guys) start going off "CHAP!? CHAP?? HAHAHHA WHAT IS A CHAP? HAHAHHAHAHA" and all sorts of ridiculous smartass comments. English guy remains pretty polite and goes in to get his friends and leave. His two friends are one tallish athletic looking pretty much normal looking dude and one guy who looks like a cross between Handsome Rob (Jason Statham) and Big Chris (Vinnie Jones). As they are walking out, little frat boys toss some more smart-mouthed remarks their way. At this point, Vinnie goes crazy and starts yelling "Oh yeah? WHICH ONE OF YOU CHEEKY MF'ERS WAS TALKING SHT TO MY FRIEND HERE? YOU THINK THAT'S FUNNY? I WILL BEAT THE SHT OUT OF ALL FOUR OF YOU RIGHT NOW, COME ON YOU THINK I'M JOKING YOU STUPID WANKERS?" In the middle of this, there was like one smartmouth comment from one of the guys and the biggest of the frat boys was being fake held back by his buddies (he obviously wanted none of this), while the other two Brit guys were obviously straining with all they had to hold back Vinnie from beating the living daylights out of these four or five dudes. The door guy let the frat guys go in and they hightailed it into the bar so fast it was f'in hilarious. I've never seen a group of such yuppie smartasses so quickly go from being smartmouthed to completely terrified. Well, having written that, I think this story pretty much sucks unless you were there, but whatever. |

Weak story, but good story-telling. [/ QUOTE ] having seen this situation many times, i can appreciate the story. i have always enjoyed watching someone--especially some frat tool--act like a tough guy, then tuck his tail when someone doesn't buy the act. |

Diablo,
Based on the title I thought this was going to be about YOU almost getting in a fight, which would have been much cooler. Disappointed, miajag81 |

[/ QUOTE ] I hate guys that do this. There is nothing worse than a guy walking backwards yelling "want to fight pussy?". If this was in my home I would tell them to just leave and refuse to talk or even shake their hand cuz it just wastes time. Not possible in a bar though. I've seen people spray a mouthfull of beer or even piss on a chronic "i'll kill you" smack talkers leg and they still don't do [censored]. |

El D,
Could have dropped the "do you know who I am" line and they would have folded. That being said, just another case of "frat boys gone stupid". |

Re: Almost fight and strong beer month trip report
El D,
I've done a few of those brew pub crawls where you sample a wide variety of beers. By about the 9th or 10th they all start to kind of taste average to me. I recommend going to a place and sampling what's available and then party down on the best of the lot at that establishment. The next time try a different place and repeat. As for the almost fight, why didn't you try to instigate a bit so you'd have a better story for OOT? Pugnaciously yours, B2L |
