Default \"Too much free time\" criticism

"You've got too much free time on your hands."

This phrase irritates me. It's usually said in response to some sort of geeky undertaking of questionable utility, something like:

"I wrote a story where every word begins with the letter E"
"I can manipulate coins with amazing dexterity"
"I made a video of myself finishing Mario 3 in 5 minutes"
"I made a beer fetching robot"
or whatever,

is met with,

"WTF dude? You have way too much free time."

I hate it, I mean, it's basically telling the person that they're better off taking a second job instead of whatever little weird endeavor they're into. It's a value judgment that project X is so worthless that only someone with 48 hours in a day would ever get around to doing it, but without saying why.

Why is this phrase so popular? And why does it piss me off so much?

It's tempting but I won't do it.

It's popular because people like feeling superior to others. It probably bothers you because, well, you have too much free time.

People rarely have anything intelligent or original to say. So, they repeat something they've heard before.
