They take the book and immediately subtract a couple thousand or more depending on the value of the car. There's an easy way around this though. Just say no thanks and walk out. They'll chase after you and offer another $500 for your car. Rinse, repeat. |

Re: Beat: Value of Trade In at Dealership, Brag: New Car
take your trade in to CarMax first. Im buying a new truck on saturday and the dealership gave me a lowball price on my tradein. I took it to CarMax, had it appraised and they gave me an offer = to KBB price. I took said price to the dealership and they matched it without any hassle.

Re: Beat: Value of Trade In at Dealership, Brag: New Car
I sold cars during college, every deskman I knew would offer the customer two or three "deals" before they got down to the actual price of the car.

Obviously the salesman do it because it's +EV because people are weak/stupid/don't care but it's really annoying. Next time I buy a car, I just want to say, "Listen, I know how this [censored] works, just give me the price you would offer if I was absolutely about to leave out the door, I'm busy and don't want to spend an hour pretending to negotiate a lower price with you." However, whatever he gave me after that I still wouldn't believe :P |

Then the closer would come in and start off with a high ball offer. I've had customers SWEAR they refused to be dicked around, and left with a deal $2k over cost. IOW, it makes no difference how you come off when you first sit down. You simply have to wait it out. The very best weapon a car buyer has is to simply grab your coat and keys and say you're gonna look around. You might even get to the door before they make another offer. Refuse that one too. One more tip, because I'm in a generous mood today. Don't negotiate on payment. Negotiate the cost of the vehicle and the value of your trade. The salesperson (or closer) will ask you at some point "what payment are you comfortable with?". If you say $400, they'll ask you if $450 is ok. They'll then try to tailor the deal around that figure. Believe me when I tell you this is no good. |

They are literally sticker price and basically cannot be haggled on. |

How much reconditioning? |

It's a little bit of a pain, but selling your car to an individual rather than trading it in will probably get you the couple thousand you are missing there.

Re: Beat: Value of Trade In at Dealership, Brag: New Car
Remember that you have a right of recission for the deal in most states which will allow you to cancel the deal. If there is financing involved, you definitely have some time to cancel it if you think that you were screwed.
