I am having an increasing problem at work and some of my employees are posting on internet forums all day while they should be working(end of rant). Is there a way to only allow IE to view certain sites? We have to use it for our POS system but thats it. Thanks all.

Where do you work? How do you get net access? If somebody smart has control of the DNS, you could certainly restrict it so that POS.System.com looks-up correctly, but any other website doesn't. That wouldn't stop the most tech-savy of the bunch, but it'd make a big difference.

specifying what *is* allowed would be helpful (all activities, not just web sites). Best/easiest policies to enforce are those that have minimum allowed access then just block everything else outgoing at your perimeter firewall.

WE have a T1 line that is thru the city. Basically, we ned to access 1 website, that is the home page when opening IE, it navigates itself beyond that. I have control over about 5 computers, the other side of the building needs full acces, I cant touch that.

I'm not a big fan of megalomaniac admins.
If the employees are doing something that is not allowed, warn them -- then fire them. |

for a cheap, easy method, make a script that replaces their hosts file with one that you have made with "banned" sites.
the hosts file can be found in WINDOWS\system32\drivers\etc and can be opened using notepad. then just enter the site you want banned, such as twoplustwo.com then hit tab and type 127.0.0.1, or any other site that you want them directed to instead. let us know if you need more instruction. |

If you feel strongly about this, warn your employees, and they don't listen, I think you probably have bigger problems then employee surfing, because clearly they don't respect your authority at all, and clearly in this post I don't respect periods. |
