I don't remember seeing POM drinks until this year and I was wondering if anyone knows anything about this stuff. Basically all I know is it's expensive and is advertised as being healthy for you. There is a picture below for those who haven't seen it.

I don't know anything about it, but POM started selling around here in 2003 I think, possibly earlier.

I read this as porn juice at first.
I believe pomengranates are expensive to juice (hence relatively new on the market) and POM charges a massive premium relative to other pomengranate juices (and of course other juices in general). I don't know the particulars but my guess is it's a fairly interesting business case... -Al |

Meh, it's decent. Nothing incredible- just tangy.

Pomegranate juice is the flavoring in grenadine syrup/mixer which is used in making Shirley Temple's and Cherry Cokes and is the red in a Tequila Sunrise.

What does fruit does it taste the most like? Cranberry? [/ QUOTE ] The fruit itself is unique and varies a lot depending on ripeness. The riper the fruit the more the flavor skews towards a combination of cherry and black currant. Earlier in the season, the seeds are much more tart. The bottled juice tends to taste a little like beets. Freshly squeezed pomegranate juice has a much lighter, more pleasant flavor. POM brand is nothing special. Those of you who are big pomegranate fans should track down a bottle of pomegranate molasses. Apparently it is a staple of Middle Eastern, especially Persian, cooking. It can be used as a finishing type item to drizzle on grilled meats or as a dipping sauce. I used it a lot as a glaze. Essentially it is heavily reduced pomegranate juice. Very unctuous. The make a grape molasses as well. I planted a pomegranate tree at the old house and have always eaten several times the standard per capita consumption level of the fruit. |

I've tasted it. It isn't that great on its own, but is good mixed.

Pomegranate juice burst into the market two years ago with POM Wonderful, whose maker has spent millions studying and touting the fruit's nutritional benefits. Now other companies, including R.W. Knudsen, Lakewood Organic, Odwalla and Naked, are getting in on the act. Odwalla's PomaGrand blends pomegranate extract with apple juice, purees of strawberry, blueberry and raspberry, and wild berry extract in one version, and mango puree in another, which temper pomegranate's mouth-puckering punch. The Food section liked both, but preferred the pure sweetness of Naked Pomegranate, touted as "All Natural Antioxidant 100% Pomegranate Juice" with no added sugar. All the juices are flash pasteurized. POM claims that pomegranate juice has a higher level of polyphenol antioxidants than red wine, green tea, cranberry cocktail juice or blueberry juice. Antioxidants may have a role in combatting allergies, heart disease, cancer and aging (See last week's "The power of superfoods" on sfgate.com/food). Those who aren't as concerned about health benefits may have noticed pomegranate juice has also become a popular cocktail mixer, and has inspired a new vodka from Pearl. Odwalla PomaGrand and Naked Pomegranate (15.2 ounces) are $2.99-$3.99 at supermarkets. [/ QUOTE ] Link |

Im not a huge fan of the juice, the fruit is good though.
It has been shown to be good for the heart and contains a lot of anti-oxidands which help the body deal with free radicals and fight cancer. I think it also has some benefits for prostate cancer. |
