Re: report: Cubs sign Soriano. 8yr 136m.
Is there a single poster in this thread that is taking into consideration the substantial increased revenues being generated by Major League Baseball?
MLB will have a new TV deal starting in 2007 with Fox, ESPN, and TBS. The deal, which goes through 2013, was supposed to provide MLB with a big increase in TV rights fees (though I can't find the exact details). A quick search showed the Cubs had revenues of $130 million in 2001. In 2005, their revenues were $179 million. That's a $37.7% increase. It's a trend that's only going to continue to go up. Those of you who are quoting VORP and other statistics are too focused on the past. There's an insane amount of money getting pumped into baseball by multiple sources. That money is going to get spent on players. $19 million/year for Soriano is a figure which is going to be topped over and over in the near future. |

I don't know much about baseball contracts. But can the Cubs just cut him at any point if they feel like it?
