I know this award is shedding significance by the minute, but Mike and the Mad Dog were speculating on it today, and were having a tough time even coming up with good candidates. There's certainly no clearcut choice. What say the minds here?

I really don't see them giving it to anyone other than Tiger after the emotional year that he had with the death of his father.

Bill Cowher?? Thought is was for the year, not the month of January 2006.

LOL at the Italian World Cup team. I think D. Wade fits the bill as a "Sportsman", so I'd go with him out of the names given.

And there is sometimes a strong element of career achievement to the award. In trying to represent all the major sports, he's probably the most likely candidate from the NFL, but you're right it's highly doubtful he wins it (and this year's Steelers team would hurt what little chance he has). As far as Tiger goes, he's obviously a strong choice, but he's already the only person to win the award twice. |

I would have said Cowher, but this season has really hurt him.

Paul Tagliabue for lifetime achievement. [/ QUOTE ] It's possible. Rozelle won it in 1963. But Tom Brady won it last year, and they don't like to give it to consecutive recipients from the same sport. As said before, it would be Tiger's third win (and nobody else has even won it more than once). Federer seems like the default selection, but tennis has dropped off the public radar so much- the last tennis player to win it was Arthur Ashe, and more for his AIDS activism than his career (he got it more than a decade after he retired). I don't think Federer does enough off the court. It's a tough one, but it feels like they might have to go outside the box somehow. Was anybody remarkable in Torino this year? (Besides those sisters on the U.S. women's curling team, I mean) |
