Default Yankees Pick Up Option on Sheffield; Sheffield Not Happy About It

USA Today story

With this attitude, why would the Yankees want him on their team? I'd love to see them trade him and brew up a controversey.

New York Yankees slugger Gary Sheffield, informed Wednesday that the Yankees will pick up his $13 million option in 2007, was angry by the decision, hoping instead the Yankees would let him go.

"This will not work, this will not work at all," Sheffield told USA TODAY. "I don't want to play first base a year for them. I will not do that."

Sheffield, who heard that the Boston Red Sox, Detroit Tigers, Chicago Cubs and Los Angeles Angels were interested him, said he was hoping to test the free-agent market and receive another three-year contract.

"I don't know what they're [Yankees] going to do," Sheffield said. "Maybe they picked it up just to trade me. If they do that, if I just to a team for one year, there's going to be a problem.

"A big problem.

"I will not do this."

Hopefully, this will keep him off the Red Sox.

P.S.
It might be a good idea for somebody to start the 2007 Yankees thread for topics like these.

What the Yanks response should be:

See this piece of paper you signed? You were more than happy to take our money, now shut up and play.

sheffield is way more likely to get traded this offseason than a-rod. didn't anyone watch the playoffs? the yankees don't want to put up with that kind of defense at first base.

he's done this before when dealing with trades, so i can't say it's surprising...sad thing is that he's such a good hitter that there will always be teams in need of his services...still surprised the yankees picked this up, i can only see this as a trade bait...

Like sailing throws from the outfield & missing his teammates on purpose & then admitting it while in Milwaukee. Brewer fans still boo they guy whenever he arrives at Miller Park.

lol Shef, you can retire if you want, but otherwise you signed a [censored] contract.

Baseball players have no idea how good they have it(thanks to their union, one of the most successful in the US).

If I recall correctly Shef not only signed this contract, he also negotiated it himself -- and then tried to renegotiate it within a month or so after he signed it. Shef got paid lots of money to sit on his ass injured this year. Now he realizes that it could get far more difficult to get a three year deal after this year, particularly if he has any injury problem at all. He should STFU, play ball and be happy with the contract he has. Hopefully the Yankees will trade him to the NL for some young pitching...

And who's going to give him a 3-year deal at this stage of his career? Not to mention $13 million.

I'm surprised they picked up the option. I can only guess that he's going to be traded, with the Yankees picking up a portion of his contract. From what I saw, he's not much improvement over Giambi at first base.
