What is the deal with all the new rooms not having players?

This is a little bit of a rant post, but I have been reading posts here in the past month(I assumed that internet games would go south and I would have to start playing live more). A month ago, I was in Vegas, and during the mid-day, I walked thru as many of the new rooms as I could get to, my feet were killing after the day. I know that at 10-11AM is not the time for good games, but I saw the new rooms at Venetien, Caesars, Harrahs,and others that surprized me that they put their poker rooms in a room behind a door so that you need to go into the room to fing the poker room. Even th e Wynn, "the new Bellagio", has tucked its room near the rear of the casino in a far hallway(at least thats what it looked like). Also, these rooms, Wynn had like 5 games going, Venetian = , Casears 0 or 1 I forgot, Harrahs = 0 trying to call down a $100NL.

Last week I was down in the Temecula area, and I popped in to Pechanga to check out the new room(Clearly been a while, I havent been there so long last time I was there the room was in the basement of the new building). I had to travel to the back of the casino(I know its the front from the other side) and up an escilator to where it looked like the staff heads to clock in and out, to a double door(closed) pokerroom. To my amazement, in Cali on a late Thursday afternoon, there were about 5 games going.

I recall Mason writing in one of his books a while back, about placing games in cardrooms that are near the rail so onlookers can see the games and maybe decide to play. Are we shutting players out of poker due to its popularity and assuming they will come and find the room wherever it is?
I have worked in the golf industry for the last 17 years, and when I started, there was an attitude of "If you build it, they will come", Well too many people with money built golf courses assuming they would make the easy money, and guess what, just like any other industry, you have to first attract a customer, then keep them, I just see the same attitude with the new breed of cardrooms.

Any ideas on this, appreciated.

First off, Vegas slows down from Sept to Dec every year.

Second off, on the above quote...you are totally wrong there. The poker room is the very first thing you come to off the parking garage. The biggest complaint in this town is how far poker rooms are from the parking. It's right next to the doors now. Correct, its not the cab drop point and it takes about 20 seconds to walk to the room from there. It's nowhere near the back of the casino.

Thanks, I didnt park there so I missed that one, on that note, is it better for the games to be near parking(locals) or front door(tourists)?

really? my understanding was that it only really slowed down from Thanksgiving to Christmas, and that most of the fall was popular for football season, reasonable weather, etc.

I've noticed that one weeknights the new turning stone room is pretty empty, but that joint has lke 30 or so tables.

You should get a good whiff of a packed bank of slots sometime. It's roughly a combination of stale cigarette smoke, extremely cheap perfume, and Depends.

I think there are now too many poker rooms in LV. I was there last week (at South Coast for the price) and even they have an 8 table poker 'area'.

As for location: Don't most LV casinos simply locate them next to the sportsbook? I certainly haven't been to most of them but that is my impression.

If you want to see a busy poker room come on down to Casino Arizona. The place starts filling up around 11am and is decently busy till the wee hours.

Maybe Harrah's is behind "hiding the poker rooms". You don't want to experience taking the hike to Harrah's Showboat Casino's poker room in Atlantic City...way upstairs, and way, way in the back...keep going...it's back there.

MGM did a great job with their new room by putting it in a high-traffic area - just off the sportsbook and close to one of their nightclubs and a bar. The result is a lot of railbirds who decide to play - and an excellent view of the foot traffic.
