Roomate Issue: Going to casino (LC)
Okay heres a short summary. My roomate from college is a highschool buddy, me and him have been playing online poker for about 3 years. I have had more sucess and made lots more money then him poker-wise and am a much better hand reader.
We went to the casino today, and I left up like 100 bucks from like a couple hours of 3-6 limit (only game they offer) and he lost 69 bucks on limit and 50 on blackjack. The times that he went before he lost a lot on blackjack and he told me to "never let him play blackjack again" and while he was waiting for me to finish up my cash game he had the urge to play Blackjack. Now I kind of feel guilty because he is my friend and I am kind of an expensive kid to be around and I kind of put the gambling urge in him (started him into poker originally). Today he told me that he has lost a total of like 240 bucks out of his 400 to the casino and that he was never gonna go again... and I need some1 to go the casino w/ because who likes going alone? Right now I am killing 100nl and my bankroll is 8k so I dont mind cashing out 200 for him and telling him to use it as a bankroll for 3-6 limit and tell him to never play blackjack. Stupid? Advice? Thoughts? |

and I need some1 to go the casino w/ because who likes going alone? [/ QUOTE ] If I am going to play poker, I prefer to go alone. If there is a long wait for a seat, a non poker playing friend can be busted out and ready to leave before you get a seat. Unless you are a hit and run artist, when you go to play poker, you will be there a while. I assume we are talking about a day trip, go play a few hours and head back home. Bankrolling a losing player is -EV. If he can't stay away from Blackjack on his own, you are not doing him a favor encouraging him to go to a casino. |

If they bust early either they have to mope around for hours waiting for you to give them a ride home, or you feel guilty and quit early. When I head to the casino, I'm going to "work". I don't take friends to work... |

Re: Roomate Issue: Going to casino (LC)
I agree about going alone, most of the time.
Back in the day I went to FW to play 5/5nl (no cap). 3rd hand I get busted QQ vs A5 all in on the turn, he hits a gutshot for the wheel. Big pot. I have $0 on me. I patiently wait on a bench for 5 hours waiting for my friends to finish (we're from boston, so I can't exactly take a cab home) Then I ask them in 2 hour intervals if we could go because I'm bored and my thumbs are tired of twiddling with themselves. 13.5hrs after I bust we get to go. Talk about a bad day. Drive to FW, knocked out on 3rd hand, and then have to wait 13.5hrs in casino with no money. |

Quit babying and enabling your roommate's irresponsibility. He's a big boy. He should be held accountable for his own choices and actions.

[ QUOTE ] [/ QUOTE ] bankroll for 3-6? im no expert, but that is only 30 big blinds worth and can easily be lost in a session. since you are so big on being a good friend, teach him how to play. all you are teaching him is how to take shots. |

Re: Roomate Issue: Going to casino (LC)
You need to ask yourself why you feel you have to buy your roommate's company. I wouldn't be giving someone gambling money to hang out with me in a casino or anywhere else. That's fairly creepy. If I were the roommate, I would be wondering what the hell you were after.

Sounds like he knows he is no good and may have a problem.
Dont force him to go. Stop being selfish. Sounds like hes a barely winning player who has so far wasted 3 years of his life. only options are respect his decision. or sit down and go over the fundamentals with him. Though if he hasnt picked it up in 3 years there may be no hope for him. |

Things are good for you at the moment. Besides, what are friends for? If you feel he'd do the same for you if situations were reversed, throw 'em a bone.

throw 'em a bone. [/ QUOTE ] If I were the friend and my roommate suddenly gave me $200 out of nowhere to go gambling, this is exactly what I'd be afraid of. How many guys give out gambling money to guys (or girls) they don't plan to sleep with? Maybe guys don't have to worry about that, though. I dunno. I can only advise from my own perspective, and obviously, as a female, if somebody was suddenly giving me money to hang out with him, I'd be super-duper paranoid about what he was after. |
