Checking with a stack of chips in your hand
I was playing at the Luxor over Labor day weekend in a LHE 2/4 game. The tables there have a commit line, but apparently it doesn't mean anything. There was one guy who always checked with a stack in his hand going over the commit line, placing the stack flat on the table over the line without letting go and often pausing for a second before he said check. He used the same motion when betting, and seemed very pleased with himself and his schtick. Guy seemed like a douche, but didn't play particularly well.
This seemed like an angle to me. What do you guys think? Should the dealer have stopped him from doing this? Should I have said something, or am I just being a nit? First, is this an acceptable way |

Re: Checking with a stack of chips in your hand
He shouldn't be doing this, but I probably wouldnt say anything. Do we really think this guy is picking up reads on people in the 2/4 limit game?

He's likely doing it to try and discourage anyone betting behind him because he has a weak hand. b |

Re: Checking with a stack of chips in your hand
Pretty sure he was mainly doing it because he thought it made him look cool. He would place the chips flat, pause, then make a motion like he was cutting off chips, whether actually checking or cutting them off for a call or raise. I'm sure he thought he was being clever and getting reads from doing this, but I doubt he was good enough for it actually make much of a difference, other than some of the total newbs you see at a 2/4 game may jump the gun and act out of turn because of this. I didn't say anything because he pretty much sucked. I think the only reason it bugged me was that for whatever reason I didn't care much for the guy, and he seemed like a real poser. Also, I was surprised that none of the dealers ever warned him, as opposed to later in the day when I played the 4/8 at Mandalay and they were total nazi's about stuff like that.

Re: Checking with a stack of chips in your hand
It's at best a bad habit and at worst a minor angle. Sooner or later he'll run into a dealer who'll warn him not to check with chips and then hold him to betting when he doesn't stop.

Re: Checking with a stack of chips in your hand
Yes, it's technically not allowed. The dealer/floor should correct him.
If he's playing like a donk, he can get away with all sorts of stuff and I won't say a word unless it's screwing up the game. If it's really bothering you, say something discretly to the floor on the way to the bathroom. |

Re: Checking with a stack of chips in your hand
First, not acceptable.
Second, what he was doing, to my eyes, was an angle. Third, House Rules. If it is ok with the House, nothing you can do. I would get up and ask the Floor and if he says it is not acceptable, ask the Floor to notify his dealers before they push into the game. |

Re: Checking with a stack of chips in your hand
At a 2/4L game, rules are loosely enforced at most houses.
Also, rules can vary. Some houses strictly forbid it, and count it as a bet (Mandalay Bay), while others couldn't care less. In general, though, at 2/4, most houses don't care about enforcing it. |
