Videogame Canon: NES

Many of you are familiar with the literary canon, the "must read" books. It starts with the Iliad, the Odyssey, and the Bible, and moves on up through the Great Gatsby etc. So what about a videogame canon?

We'll start with NES. This is not just a list of good or great NES games. This is to be a list of the games that a college professor would force his students to play. TMNT is not one of them, for example. Battletoads probably isn't one either, although I could be wrong as I've never played it.

I'll start...I'm leaving out some likely candidates that I have not played.


Super Mario Bros. 1-3 - Not really debateable, except for 2.

Zelda 1 and 2
Final Fantasy
Dragon Warrior - You can definitely argue for a sequel/sequels belonging here, go ahead if you want to.

Metroid
Mega Man - Some say 3 is best (I think that's what they say), but I'd rather put part 1 just because it's the first. I do not think Mega Man is important enough to have more than one entry.

That's all I can think of for now, and I'm not going to consult a list yet...

I am not a particularly big fan of Zelda II. I think it was done poorly, though the innovations in the game are undeniable. At best I rate it an Honorable Mention.

As for RBI Baseball, I agree, but Baseball Stars is much better.
