Default A DANGEROUS THREAT TO ONLINE POKER.

fyi....

-------

Hi AZK,

I don’t know if you have been paying attention to the Legislation forum recently, but there is a new wrinkle in the attempt to hinder online gaming that currently poses a very large threat to us.

Senate Majority leader Bill Frist (Tenn) is attempting to piggyback the internet gambling prohibition onto a bill that authorizes US Military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan.
This bill has passed both chambers entirely and is already in a Conference Committee.

This post tells of the latest news of the action of the proposal, pay extra attention to posts by Mr. K, Berge20, and Nate tha Great to get the best idea of what’s going on.

After reading this you’ll realize it’s now not only important for people to get in touch with their senators about HR4411, but their senators that are conferees on the the Department of Defense Authorization Conference Report, the bill that Frist wants to piggyback on. This makes our situation quite bleak as this bill will almost certainly pass no matter what is attached to it. However, members of the DoD are opposed to any other language being tacked onto their bill, and motivation from their constituents may help a great deal.

The conferees can be found here.

The threat of our lifestyle being squashed is becoming much more real than most people realize, just brining this to your attention, as it seems not too many people know about it, I highly suggest reading this information and at your judgment consider posting a sticky on it in HSNL, as it may help our plight.

I apologize if you find this PM and request intrusive, but I strongly don’t want to give up the lifestyle that online poker has given me. I can only assume you feel the same way.

Thanks for reading.

Wake up before it gets worse.
Couple of years back our Republican (one party state)
congress passed laws prohibiting banks from allowing
credit cards to be used at gambling sites. Now they keep
trying to shut down all of online poker.
Republicans and religious extemists will own us if we
only let them.
Write your congressman, and make sure to vote
Anti-incumbent, and even more importantly vote
Anti-Republican.

Thanks for alerting us about this. I just left a message for Senator Roberts and Rep Ryun(KS) voicing my concerns about the piggyback issue.

Default Who to Call & What to Say

Who to call:

Our fate is going to be determined by the members of the House-Senate conference committee, a list of which I've linked to here, in conjunction with leadership members like Senator Frist. The bill that emerges from the conference committee is overwhelmingly likely to become public law. If that bill contains provisions on internet gambling, those will become law.

Thus, the best person to contact is a senator from your state, or a represenative from your distict, who serves on the conference committee. If you have multiple congresspersons who serve meet this criteria, call each of them. The next best option is probably to contact a representative on the conference committee who serves in your state, but not in your district.

What to say:

- I am a {Republican/Democratic} voter in your {state/district}. (I would only mention your party affiliation if it corresponds with that of the congressperson. If you are a veteran or reservist, or have a son/daughter/father/brother who serves in the military, I might also mention that.)

- I oppose Senator Frist's effort to attach provisions on internet gambling to the Department of Defense Authorization bill.

- Internet gambling is a complex issue that deserves to be debated before the full light of day in the Senate.

- It is particularly inappropriate to attach extraneous language to a defense bill, where it jeopardizes pay raises for our troops in a time of war.

- Congress should instead work to tax and regulate gambling over the Internet, as it does other forms of gambling like lotteries and horse racing.
