Acoustic singer/songwriter music
I'm really happy with the fact that a whole slew of new(ish) acoustic singer/songwriter type artists have started getting some recognition lately. The only problem is that I've started running out of new artists to listen to. Post some of your favourites in this thread and maybe I can find some new stuff to listen to.
Iron & Wine - Need I say anything? Damien Rice - A great artist from Ireland. His debut album 'O' is IMO one of the top 5 albums ever. I've been waiting for a new album for years. Jose Gonzalez - This swedish artist is a bit gloomier than the others, but in some ways I think he may be even better than the rest. I've heard him described as Joy Division meets bossa nova, but I don't listen to either of those so I can't comment on that. I'm going to see him live in a couple of weeks, possible trip report to follow. Joseph Arthur - A bit different from the rest, but I thought I would include him anyway. On his page you can download a seven song live show that is absolutely fantastic. Joshua Radin - A bit more pop than the rest. It's so unfair that the first song he ever wrote is Winter (an excellent song), and all I can write is cheese. Kings of Convenience - A Norwegian(?) duo. Others worth mentioning are Jack Johnson (he's ok), James Blunt (getting a bit too commercial), Grant Lee Phillips and Elliott Smith. Edit: I decided to focus on some newer stuff and intentionally left out Dylan, Simon & Garfunkel, Nick Drake and company, but if you want to suggest some older stuff that's cool. |

Re: Acoustic singer/songwriter music
One of my favorite singer/songwriter's is John Prine . He may not be new, but the depth of his lyrics and quality of his vocals keep me coming back for more.

kitaristi0, what Iron and Wine album do you recommend? I've decided its time for me to give some of these newer guys a chance.

[/ QUOTE ] I guess the one to start with would be his first full lenth album Creek Drank The Cradle. Very lo-fi, just him and his guitar alone in his bedroom recorded on a 4-track I believe. If you prefer something a bit more orchestrated and "full" sounding, then I would say the Woman King EP. This one's recorded in a studio with lots of other musicians. They're both very good, just different. |

David Gray. His DVD "Live at the Point" is excellent and worth checking out along with his albums.
