Getting a cat - advice?
OK so I live in a condo, dog is not an option. I like both dogs and cats; it's remarkable how polarized people can get about that subject though.
Anyway, I am gonna get a cat. But it's not like taking a car for a test drive; obviously the one I choose is going to be the one I keep. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what kind to get? I don't give a crap about showy ones like Siamese etc. but DO like ones that like getting their belly scratched. Unfortunately I've asked around and done a lot of research and can't find a specific breed that likes this, it appears to be specific to the cat. Any advice or suggestions are appreciated. Thanks for your time.

The only type of dog that would work in my condo is one of those little annoying yippy ones. I tend to hate on them by default, but then a good friend inherited one after his sister-in-law offed herself, and we have formed an unexpected bond. Nonetheless, I find cats > yippy dogs by a very large margin.

I figured for the personality I'm going for, cost won't matter. IOW bengalese, siamese, etc. is meaningless to me. Plus those expensive ones might have attitudes. I get enough of that from real bitches. [img]/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] About ten years ago, a friend's father gave us his cat. For about 30 minutes. The cat liked to be scratched in the belly and had an otherwise great disposition, but the guy returned shortly after he left - couldn't part with the cat, despite the challenges that led to him donating it to me. Also, advice on whether getting a kitten is smart or too much of a PITA is very welcome also.

I agree that little yippy dogs can be a royal pain. However, not all small dogs are like that. If you're not opposed to the idea of a smaller dog, look into West Highland Terriers.
 Bijons tend to be really sweet dogs as well, and aren't very loud IIRC. I don't really know anything about different cat breeds, but I have read stuff on animal behavior and handling pets. Cats, probably even more than dogs, are much more responsive and affectionate to the people that treat them right. Things like reaching down to pick them up can scare the cat since you're coming from above. Just handling them correctly will make a world of difference. I'm sure PetCo has plenty of $10 books on the subject.

Having to hold their pee all day and live in an apartment seems cruel, for dogs. It's fine for cats, though.

how much do you want to spend? I bought 2 bengals for mid 3 figures.. One we bought mostly because he was the prettiest, despite the fact that was kinda alouf when we saw him at 4 weeks compared to the rest of his littermates. He turned out to be a terrible terrible cat, jumpy, nervous, rarely showed affection, cried when he was bored. We bought another one mostly for #1 to have a friend and this time we chose the most outgoing of the litter. He is a terrific fun playful affectionate nonwhiny nonjumpy cat.

[/ QUOTE ] Yea, we had a Bengal. Bengals with energy are by far the coolest and most loving cats ever.
