[/ QUOTE ] Yeah, 5 walks in 5 innings. Let's see him allow a walk an inning for the rest of the year. [/ QUOTE ] Jack is right, Leiter had a 2.4 WHIP night. He allowed 12 baserunners(not counting the HBP) in 5 innings. The fact that he only gave up 1 run was due in large part to the fantastic defense behind him tonight, mainly the trio of Jeter, A-Rod, and Tino. Leiter was quite bad tonight, and the stats reflect that. Leiter can't control hits as much as he can the walks. He did have some ground balls that found holes in the infield, but he also left a lot of pitches in the fat part in the zone. He threw 3 balls on almost every batter he faced. Jesus, he threw 112 pitches in 5 innings. That is awful any way you look at it, because he wasn't striking players out. 112 pitches in 5 innings and only 2 strikeouts? There is no way to spin that as a good outing, technologic. He should have struck out 7 if he was going to throw 112 pitches in 5 innings. That's 22.4 pitches an inning, which is 2 more than he averaged in Florida I think. Leiter got lucky, dude, and that's just the truth. ERA doesn't tell the whole story. Leiter had a 1.80 ERA night tonight, and 80% of it was luck. I think that Jack will agree with me on this one. You want to look at a great Yankee pitching performance? Look at Unit's performance on Tuesday night. 2 hits in 8 innings pitched, with zero walks. Leiter didn't even come close to matching that tonight. |

please, there was that atrocious (i mean awful, no doubt) checkswing with 2 strikes in the 7th or 8th that would have gotten tanyon out of the inning and it would have stayed at 1-0.
