something weird; looking for opinions
I'm waiting to hear back from my #1 law school pick (been waiting over 4 months). Yesterday in the mail I got a piece of mail from Pick-A-Prof Student Services, and the return address says it's from the University of Georgia (where I want to go). It's postmarked in Texas, so I'm guessing it's just some company that that has a contract with the school allowing them to contact me.
The letter is advertising something that allows me to review grade histories of professors, and begins with the sentence "Congratulations on your recent admission to the University of Georgia-- the state's flagship institution of higher education." But I haven't heard anything from the school, and it doesn't have any updates on my application online, where they allow you to check the status. I'm confused; I want to be ecstatic that I got into the school, but I don't see how a company got the news about my acceptance and sent me a piece of mail before I heard back from the school itself, especially considering such a thing would be updated online. Any opinions? Anyone have experience with stuff like this? I realize I can just call the school tomorrow but I'm giddy and impatient, and looking for reasons to be happy. Thanks ahead of time. |

What a giant letdown it would be if you find out tomorrow you didn't actually get into the school.

[/ QUOTE ] This is a big reason why I'm pretty sure I got in; schools dare not make this kind of mistake for the student's sanity's sake. Also, if they're going to give personal information out to companies who advertise with letters bearing their name, they better be damn sure they have their facts straight. |

Re: something weird; looking for opinions
Assume you didn't get in until you officially hear from the school, this could be a mistake. Better to hope for the best but expect the worst, it seems entirely possible this could be a screwup. Also, the school might be closed tomorrow, you might have to wait until Wednesday.
Funny school letter mix-up story: I once got a letter from the University of Rochester with my name mis-spelled. Instead of "Dear Mike" it read "Dear Kike". |

Re: something weird; looking for opinions
Yeah, I know I need to just wait it out until I have something more conclusive-- I'm just right there on the edge of excitement, trying to reign myself back. I also predicted people would offer the advice you gave; I was hoping on that outside chance someone knew that something like this happens often and is followed shortly by a letter of acceptance.
I think I might celebrate anyway with the same liquor I drink every night. |
