Why does Time mag. refer to Bombay and not Mumbai?
This was in their recent feature on economic growth in India. The name was changed more than 10 years ago.

Re: Why does Time mag. refer to Bombay and not Mumbai?
I see all kinds of history books that refer to "Constantinople", instead of "Istanbul". It's like...wtf?? OMG.

Re: Why does Time mag. refer to Bombay and not Mumbai?
All the Indian cities seem to go by their old names, I never see Kolkata or Chennai in a Western publication either. On the other hand Beijing is always written Beijing.

They didn't want to confuse their readership. I'm sure the magazine editors are aware of the name change.

[ QUOTE ]
They didn't want to confuse their readership. [/ QUOTE ] Jeeze, that would be a bad choice, I think. Do they still talk about Yugoslavia and the Czech Republic? Not a great analogy, I know, because those countries have had their territories split up rather than just a change of name. But I'd think the readers can cope, and a "(formerly Bombay)" in the first paragraph would surely be enough. According to Wikepedia many residents still use "Bombay". |

'insert some idiotic comment about ceylon' [/ QUOTE ] What country is the agitator Aung San Suu Kyi from? (according to Time). Unlike Beijing or Mumbai I think both names for this country are used in the media. edit: from Wikipedia [ QUOTE ] Major news organisations like the BBC and western governments, including those of the United States and the United Kingdom, still officially refer to it as Burma. The Economist and The New York Times are among several Western publications to regularly use the term "Myanmar". [/ QUOTE ] Time.com uses both. |

Re: Why does Time mag. refer to Bombay and not Mumbai?
It's basically Turin/Torino now. Mumbai sounds like the name of bin Laden's daughter. Using Bombay in American publications is clearly better.
