Macbooks
I hate to start another laptop thread in here, but with the new ability to boot windows I've been considering pawning off my PC in favor or a MacBook sometime in the next month or two.
The MacBooks look great. They seem to be reasonably priced. Especially with the student discount and this back to school deal. But of course I've been hearing some bad things. Such as: Staining and Overheating Anybody here have one of these yet or heard any first-hand complaints or praise? It seems like these are pretty big issues. |

Re: Macbooks
don't forget "swelling" batteries and buzzing noises.
my gf is in academia and it would help her to be able to run os x in addition to windows. we were thinking about getting a macbook pro for her, but postponing the purchase until they resolved the heat issues. the staining wasn't a concern with the pro because it's grey. we went to a mac store to check out the systems in person, and they were uncomfortably hot. then i read about the buzzing noises under moderate cpu load with the 'fix' being to disable one of the cpu cores, and we said screw it. she's getting a thinkpad. if they had a high-res 17" macbook i would absolutely want one too, but not until the line's major issues are addressed. apple denied the g4 cubes were cracking (google that epidemic) and wouldn't resolve it under warranty when it happened, so i don't have any faith in applecare to insure that whatever problems she might have with the system would be fixed. |

Re: Macbooks
yeah it seems like these are essentially unpurchasable right now. how does apple work in regard to upgrades? (i'm referring to newer "versions" of these systems) should i assume that at some point in the future a new version of the macbook will come out that has all of these fixed?
