We've heard it several times during these matches - 'so-and-so country has the best midfield in the world'. We've seen all the best, so who exactly is THE best?

Brazil, you can't argue with Ronaldiho and Kaka. That said, Spain's looked superb today and they have Fabregas on the bench who is mindblowingly good for his age.

France's is over the hill. England's is excellent, but it lacks the balance to be the best.

England has the best central midfield - Gerrard and Lampard are in the top 10 players in the world. Cole is OK but not amazing. Beckham is gash and should not be starting (would prefer Lennon or Wright-Phillips right now).

[/ QUOTE ] You say this despite the fact that Lampard and Gerrard have always been average for England and Becks and Cole have been Englands best players for the last 6 months. On paper England may have the best midfield on papaer but untill Lamps and Stevie G sort out how to play together it can not be the best in the world. |

Getting the most out of Stevie G and Lampard would need a tactical switch, as neither is well suited to playing the holding role. E.g. Carrick holding, with Gerrard, Lampard and Cole pushing forward. Something that adventurous is obviously beyond our bespectacled Swedish friend however... |

I voted for England. I think they have the best balance of attacking players and defensive ball winner types. Brazil has much better guys for going forward but are pretty weak at getting the ball. Czech Republic are also good but I give the edge to England.
Basically I think a team with pretty much an entirely attacking midfield won't be effective against other top teams. Consider Real Madrid in Spain the last few years. Since they sold Claude Makelele, their best defensive midfielder they haven't won anything. They had a Zidane, Figo, Beckham, and Solari in the midfield, four elite attacking players obviously, and they won no titles. |

Seems like a toss-up between England and Brazil. I went with England.
