Standing at Attention for God Bless America at Sporting Events
I always gladly stand at attention for the Star Spangled Banner prior to sporting events. Over the last few years it seems that we as spectators are expected to stand for God Bless America as well. This is not our national anthem. How did this come about? What is next? Are we going to have to start standing for America The Beautiful, Born In the USA and any song performed by the group America?
This creeping forced patriotism has to end. |

It is just another symptom of the over exuberant patrotism that has plagued our country post 9/11.

Re: Standing at Attention for God Bless America at Sporting Events
If they choose to play God Bless America instead of the Star Spangled Banner, then I don't think it's an imposition at all. I'm not aware of any arena or park playing multiple songs before games.
The U.S. national anthem is a weak song. I'd much rather have something else played. |

They play the national anthem before the game, and God Bless America during the seventh inning stretch. It's just mindless patriotism, and it should have ended after the 2001 season, IMO.
