need your opinion

Story:
Two individuals meet online (Not a dating site). They live in different states but after a lot of emailing back and forth realize that they have a lot in common. They have never spoken on the phone. They decide that it would be a good idea to meet. One of them decide to do some searching on the other person to make sure that person is not some psycho killer. Upon telling the other one, that person gets upset about the fact that a search was conducted on them and decides not to email again. Communication is gone.
My question is, was it wrong for that person to do the search with everything you see in the news? Why would the other one get so upset?

maybe she wanted to meet the individual very much but was just making sure he wasn't a criminal or weirdo?
