ok, I know this is what you are suppose to do, but I've never really had a ton of discussion about it.
I'm playing in a $1,500 wsop event I won a seat to this year, and although I don't think the tourney is a huge deal, I'd like to get a couple things squared away. All the other live tourneys I've played, sometime I look first, sometimes I don't. Here's why I like to look first if I'm in late position. If I know what my cards are, I can then look at the betting coming to me and have 3 or 4 options depending on what happens in front of me. Now of course there are times based on the betting I don't care what my cards are, I could put in a raise blind. But there are other times I want to process some information along the way (knowing the betting, knowing my cards). Sometimes when I don't look first, I feel rushed when it gets to me. I guess that's just my own fault. I guess I just don't feel like I miss a ton of info by looking at my cards real quick, but apparently I'm wrong. I guess why I don't look first, I just need to have a range of hands based on the action/tells in front of me. Like so many others, I'm use to playing in the internet, so I obviously always know my cards before the action is to me. Flame away and throw in a peice of advice or two if you could. |

Usually it's recommended you wait till your turn so that you don't give off tells before it's your action. Of course if you wait until everyone's paying attention to you to look at your cards, you may end up hurting yourself more by waiting.
My philosohpy is: do what's comfortable, try not to give off tells. |

I don't think it matters how you do it, as long as you do it in a way that doesn't give information. I prefer to look immediately and mark my cards. But if you do this, you have to treat every hand the same even if you are unlikely to play when the action reaches you. Waiting until it is your turn to act prevents anyone from getting information until it is your turn, but realize that everyone will be paying VERY close attention to you as you look at your cards.

You have a masters in what?
Live MTT play is a lot different than internet.A lot easier in my opinion.I had one last year with 320 entrants. I played 7 hands entire tourny and came in third. I had another with 170 entrants and came in fifth and played 5 hands. With 4-5 people seeing the flops you are lucky to make 2 orbits per blind level. These are American Legion type MTTs with 150-350 players and non professional dealers. |
