Default got hustled

bellagio 10-20NL, villain who is crazy and on tilt raises to 200 (he has about 4k, i cover), i call otb with Ah5h.

flop 9d7h2h, he bets 500, i think he's fos and call.

he moves all-in blind before the turn is dealt, which is a black 5. i ask for a count, he has 3.4k; i decide he's fos a large percentage of the time, and if he's not fos the best he has is an overpair and i still have 14 outs, so i call.

he stops the dealer from giving us the river and says to me, "do you wanna make a deal?" i say, "depends on what you have. show me your hand, i'll show mine, and we can talk about doing business."

he says, "i have a pair," but doesn't turn over his hand, "how about we just take back the all-in bet and play for what's in the pot."

i think to myself, well, if he has a pair i'm definitely behind, so i say, "fine," and we pull back our 3.4k. NOW he shows his hand: KdJd.

i'm way too naive for vegas; i better wise up or i'll never survive in this town.

Are deals typically possible? I thought they were only for high stake apes on TV.

So who was it, some random douche bag or a regular? What was the "action" after the hand?

I read some Phil Laak article on "good faith" from opponents. He was in a hand where it was a coin flip on the flop. He had overpair to opps, flush draw with over. He didn't want to flip a coin for so much. His opponent kindly offered to take back 5K each. Basically if you think your opponent is smart, don't take it. I doubt any gambler offers some deal where he doesn't have an edge.
