Default Give me examples of indy/punk/metal subgenres

It seems like I can't read a music review without running into a bunch of words I don't know the meaning of. Many of them end in "-core" or start with "post-". I don't know much about these genres, but when I listen to indy/punk/metal there's a lot of stuff I like and a lot of stuff I don't like, but I lack the vocabulary to describe what I'm hearing.

What I'm looking for are albums that are "typical" examples of particular sub-genres. If possible, suggest a good album you think best embodies the particular sub-genre. This doesn't just have to apply to new music.

Most music reviewers don't accurately use these terms. It sounds snobby when I say this, but Fallout Boy isn't 'emo', and As I Lay Dying isn't 'hardcore'. They throw terms around without knowing anything about the genre.

I'm just trying to broaden my musical horizons. For example, if I really like someone's recommendation for DC hardcore, I'll check out out some other albums and artists in the category.

Post-Hardcore:
At the Drive In - Relationship of Command
Alexisonfire - Alexisonfire

Metalcore:
Avenged Sevenfold - Sounding the Seventh Trumpet

Screamo:
Senses Fail - Let It Enfold You

Melodic Hardcore:
Thrice - The Illusion of Safety

I'm no expert but this is where I would place these bands if someone asked me what they were. I personally think all the sub-genres are pretty stupid and people who live and die by them "genre nazis" as I call them really piss me off.

I generally don't break it down much past "indy", "punk", or "hardcore".. metalcore is the one exception, because it fits.

Since you mentioned DC hardcore, here ya go:

Minor Threat, Faith, Dag Nasty, State of Alert.. a bunch others. Better yet: www.dischord.com Find one of the bands I listed and they'll list a bunch more. Either Minor Threat or Faith is my favorite.

My favorite album(as you can tell from my avatar).

I agree that sub-genres are pointless. Most bands could be classified into several of them. Also the definitions of many sub-genres are inconsistent or evolving. It's really not worth the effort.
